On a vaguely musical Sunday

Nick Heyward
On a Sunday (1983)

It’s cold and it’s raining but the predicted icy Armageddon has not yet occurred. All the same, I’m staying inside cooking, watching movies, playing with databases, and otherwise being geeky and warm.

  • I don’t really either like or dislike this song but why is it that every time I hear it I think it’s the second coming of The Outfield? I guess the Saturday Night Live sketch a couple of weeks back helped me make the connection. Or not…
  • I do kind of like this “new” two-year-old song by Bear Hands although I’m not 100% sure why.
  • Despite the fact that I’m not really doing Christmas anymore, this is always worth a look.

OK. That’s enough. Back to my blankie now…

I think Mom would approve…

…of the new Groceteria-inspired kitchen display.

I had a very dignified and grown-up house in Winston-Salem and I think I’ve decided that’s not really what I want in Greensboro…as I currently fancy myself neither as especially dignified nor as particularly grown up.

But it’s way past my bedtime so I may discuss that more tomorrow. Or sometime over the next eleven days that I’m off. There are certain perks to being university faculty.

I should probably go to bed…

Sunday morning

Sitting on the couch in my room, watching the rain and the ocean, listening to Oscar Peterson, and reading a good book about Montreal in the 1940s and 1950s. I really should spend more vacations this way. Maybe I wouldn’t be so exhausted when I got home…

No longer jailbait

The website currently known as Otherstream.com is eighteen tears old today. What this means is:

  • Children born the day I uploaded the first version of the site are now of legal age in the United States. Unless they want to drink. Or run for president.
  • I have been doing this for a good deal more than a third of my life and more than half of my adult life.
  • The site has survived several homes, cars, and jobs, and has now lasted almost twice as long as my stab at marital bliss.
  • I’m old.

Moving into year nineteen, I continue not to be certain what the whole site is about anymore but I also keep on not pulling the plug. So go figure…

Also, after tolerating it for work for quite a while, I’ve also just jumped onto Twitter because (a) the person who had staked out @otherstream for quite some time has apparently relinquished it and (b) I figured I’d better associate the site with it for at least a few months before it becomes the next dead technology. Twitter annoys me more than a little so I’m not sure how active I’ll be, but feel free to stop in.

Anyhow, thanks a lot to the seven of you who still frequent the site. I really appreciate it!

Milestones and travel

I have something of a milestone birthday this year (I’ve not yet decided which one it will be) and I desperately want to celebrate it somewhere other than here. Since it’s in August, a cooler climate might be nice. Any ideas?

More March

It’s very pretty. But the cable is out (and the Internet with it), there are tree pieces all over my backyard, and I’m terrified to see what my house in Winston-Salem looks like right now. I shouldn’t complain because at least I have power, which is apparently better than half the households in the county, but it can all go away now, okay?
