The Hermit Thing Is Almost Over

At this point, I’d start counting down how many hours of hermitdom I have left, but I’m not sure what time Mark is showing up with the U-Haul on Saturday, so I can’t do that yet…

Remind me of this if I complain about moving heavy objects this weekend: things could be much worse. I could be stuck in this little corner of hell instead. On the upside, though, San Francisco should be almost tolerable all weekend, since so many of the most annoying people will be in the desert through Monday…

It’s been a good week for movies on The Mystery Channel and TCM, with “Mildred Pierce” and “Double Indemnity” still to come before sundown tomorrow. The VCR is starting to overheat…

One Day Left

It’s a bit over 24 hours now until the murderingmove. I don’t think there’s anything much more I can say about how excited and happy I am. I’ll keep you updated on all the rest, but that will come after the weekend…

Today’s Cohabitation News

Sorry to disappear for so long. Sorry also not to have answered a single piece of email in over a week. Things have been a little hectic, after all, what with moving furniture, arranging things, trying to connect the DSL, merging two households, etc…

Thanks to Sarah and to KC and Galen for all the assistance, to Duncan and Rick for the flowers, and to the all the well-wishers who have emailed, etc…

Everything’s going beautifully with the exception of one set of severely aroused allergies on my part (dust, dontcha know?) and one moderately-damaged foot on Mark’s part. I’ll have more to say soon on all this, as well as on Bill Simon, fast food, mandatory sterilization of idiots, and more…

But not just now…

Camping and Hogs

Two random thoughts since I’m still without the time nor inclination to do a regular journal entry (nor, sadly, to answer email):

  1. It’s taken human beings thousands of years to evolve to the point where we generally no longer have to sleep outside nor on dirt. Why on earth would anyone want to do either of these things as vacation entertainment?
  2. Does anyone know where I can find one of those “hogs are beautiful” posters they used to have in all the barbecue joints in North Carolina?

Maybe later I’ll start one of those “100 Things About Me” journal entries everyone’s doing this week. Maybe not…

Stupid SBC

SBC. Five phone companies in search of a clue. Absolute fucking morons. Enough said…

I promise a real update Friday or Saturday. I may even answer some email. But you’ll be pleased to know that the apartment in 90% habitable now and I’ve figured out how to work all the new electronics. Except for the DSL modem, which inspired the above rant…

Randomly Friday

Yeah, I’m a black one too. No surprise there, but I didn’t like the quiz very much since there was no “none of the above” category for the movies or the TV shows…

I spent Friday morning going through all my 8mm videocassettes, getting them labelled and placed on their new shelf in chronological order, which was actually a fairly random thing to do. Pop in one and I’m having sex with some shaggy-headed boy in 1994, pop in the next one and I’m in Seattle with Mark last April, and pop in a third to find a department store in downtown Detroit being imploded in 1998. So goes my non-linear life…

I’m pretty damned happy in the current incarnation of said life, I must admit. I have the most wonderful boy in the world living under my roof, I’ll have health insurance again in December, you could eat off the kitchen floor, and Viva Rock Vegas is on this afternoon. Doesn’t get much better than that, huh?

There have been a few (very few, actually) random stresses as we’ve been getting used to each other’s weekday personalities. But we got rid of the final giant pile of trash on Wednesday night, and the last Goodwill run will come tomorrow. The place looks better than it ever has before. And I’m finding it surprisingly easy getting used to having someone sleeping next to me every night, and surprisingly easy going right back to sleep when he gets up two hours earlier than I do…

It’s quite an improvement over this week last year, when it took 11 September to get my mind off my health problems, if only by giving me something else to be freaked out about. Come to think of it, though, it was also almost a year ago that Mark and I began our regular email correspondence. I think that worked out pretty well…

Offline

I’ve been online (work-related stuff excluded) for an average of about 5-10 minutes a day for the past couple of weeks. And you know what? I haven’t really missed it…

No Plans

Mark‘s gone to Fresno for the weekend and I’ve made no specific plans for the day other than to catch up on about a month’s worth of email and maybe to work on a special feature. So watch this space. Or your inbox. Or both…

This, of course, assumes that it’s not miserably, insufferably hot like it’s been for the past three days. In which case I’ll be hanging out in the frozen food section at Safeway all day…

Cheerwine Alert

By the way, did I mention my exciting news of the week? There’s actually locally-purchased Cheerwine in my refrigerator. It’s expensive as all get-out (about the price of imported beer or microbrews) and it comes in these retro glass bottles, but it’s now available to Californians who venture to Beverages & More…

Good collards, Krispy Kreme, and now Cheerwine. It’s nice to see a bit of civilization come to a cultural backwater like San Francisco. If I could just come up with a source for Neese’s Liver Pudding, I could finally show these cretins how to live right…

Haven’t gotten far with the email, but I did finish some actual new content at Planet SOMA. It’s a look at an exciting new fall TV season. And it’s probably not exactly what you’re thinking it is…
