Blue Apon Blues

Hehehe (link via Rae, who lived through the very same hell as me)…

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me well that my many years dealing with the public shaped my personality in a very meaningful way. Believe it or not, there was a time when I actually liked people and had faith in humanity…

OK, maybe I’m overstating that a little, but I really was much less cynical before I started interacting with the public for pay. Even now, when I haven’t really waited on a customer in a retail business in about five years, I still can’t shake the notion that a high proportion of the people I’ll encounter in the course of an average day will be blathering idiots…

It’s depressing sometimes, especially since I’m usuallly right…

Things That Don’t Matter

So baseball players are using steroids and there’s currently no rule saying they can’t. Is there any real reason I should care?

I’m a strong advocate of ethics, but I prefer to fight battles about things which actually MATTER in the overall scheme of things. Frankly, this is no more of an ethical crisis than the fact that certain musicians are stoned out of their gourds when they walk onstage. Get some perspective: professional baseball players are nothing more than somewhat overpaid entertainers. Earth will continue to orbit the sun no matter what drugs they take and whether or not their performance is enhanced by taking them…

I’m no more appalled by this than by learning that Milli Vanilli lip-synched their musical drivel, or that Bart Simpson’s voice is provided by a woman, or that certain game shows in the 1950s were rigged in order to make them more entertaining. Really, who cares? It’s show biz. It’s all about illusion and entertainment. We’re not talking foreign policy here…

One benefit, though, is that a 50% drug-abuse rate might save us from any number of tedious TV guest appearances by ex-jocks in coming decades, since many of them will be dead and all…

Weekend Plans

So I guess I’ll be spending the weekend with my mistress rather than with number one. Not my preferred state of affairs, but at least there’s Vertigo with Sarah at the Paramount tomorrow night (or tonight, depending on when you tuned in)…

But for now, sleep has an almost magical allure. I won’t say exactly why I lost so much sleep Wednesday night, but I will state for the record that I won’t be visiting Quizno’s again anytime soon…

I’m an Idiot

Well, that was pretty fucking stupid. One little Apache configuration file, uploaded to the wrong place because I wasn’t paying attention this morning, and all of my sites became virtually unusable for a couple of hours. I didn’t even notice until a few minutes ago. Anyway, it’s fixed now, and I hang my head in Apache-enhanced shame…

I should’ve just stuck to my program of mindlessly plotting the evolution of Peter Marshall’s hair on the Game Show Network all day…

My server logs are gonna be UGLY tonight…

The Weekend

A rather sensuous Saturday night it was…

Before the one-handed readers among you get too excited, maybe I’d better define “sensuous”. First came a bacon cheddar burger at the Bullshead (and the obligatory moment of thanks to my pal Ken in LA for introducing me to this place several years ago). Next came a trip to Tower where I raided the DVD sale and only wound up $48 poorer. The conclusion was banana ice cream at Mitchell’s…

Thanks to Jamie for putting up with my less than stellar mood all evening and for making me feel better by actually spending more money than I did…

And yes, last night’s showing of Vertigo with Sarah at the Paramount was pretty damned cool too. It’s an amazing place, and I’m now very much looking forward to seeing Dr. Strangelove there later this summer. Sarah’s gonna have cool pictures soon too…

For the present, though, it’s a little SNL, a little more Jane Jacobs (glad you’re enjoying it too, baby), perhaps a nice wank, and then sleep, wishing I had some very specific company for each endeavor…

Monday Night

Nothing gives Monday night quite the “kick” that writing almost eighteen hundred dollars worth of checks does. One day in and this week most definitely needs to end soon…

And I’m out of cookies, dammit. Not that I could really afford any right now even if I were inclined to drag my ass to the Safeway…

Naked

I haven’t had a self-indulgent front page photo in a while, so here’s a new one. I actually like this one; Sarah always manages to take pictures of me which make me look less fat. What a wonderful talent…

Anyway, if you want a bigger version, so I can be your desktop or your dart board (or even better, so you can paste my head on a much more attractive naked body), let me know. If you try hard enough, you can even crop me out completely and wind up with a really nice shot of Oakland’s old Emporium and I. Magnin stores and the Paramount Theatre marquee…

Stupid teenager on Cops: he thinks if he tells them he’ll commit suicide if he goes to jail that they’ll just skip it. He doesn’t realize that statement will only get him thrown into a tiny “suicide watch” cell, butt-ass naked lest he strangle himself with his clothing. Which might be a more appealing image (the naked part, that is) if he weren’t such a scuzbag…

Hmmm. I used the word “naked” in two consecutive paragraphs. That should help with the search engine referrals. It also suggests that I need a conjugal visit very badly…

Domestic Violence

So I’m scouring craigslist for job openings and I see a posting for a position as a “domestic violence facilitator”. Does that strike anyone else as a rather odd position title? I should think there would be more of a market for people who IMPEDE domestic violence rather than facilitate it…

The Mood

I’m in one of those moods today. Not at all a bad mood, mind you. Just one of those moods which dictates that — before I go to bed tonight — one of my sites will go through a semi-major change or I will have even less hair on my head than usual…

Or maybe I’ll do something REALLY radical. Like washing the dishes and mopping the kitchen floor (for all the good the latter ever does)…

I’ll keep you posted…
