My experience is that the cheaper the lodging, the more likely they’ll have free wi-fi. I especially hate the upmarket hotels that charge $10+ for wi-fi as well as $15 for a muffin and coffee.
This theory breaks down at least at the Motel 6 where I was staying, alas…
Speaking of free wi-fi being nice, I recently discovered that evangelical Christians can sometimes be useful. The storefront church next door to my neighborhood laundromat has an unprotected wi-fi base station.
