Why is it that so many people expect transit projects to pay for themselves, but no one ever expects highway projects to?

Because transit projects benefit poor people disproportionately, and wealthy drivers are sick and tired of those poor people constantly getting handouts. And then there’s the fact that the auto industry is considered too important not to subsidize in perpetuity.
Because politicians are trying to convince people that they won’t have to pay for something that they will never use.
